Con Edison Extends New Advanced Analytics and Enterprise AI Applications to C3 AI Suite

Network applications designed, developed and deployed on C3 AI’s enterprise AI platform reduce time to value, optimize operations and provide adequate voltage to 5 million customers

C3 IA (NYSE: AI), a leading provider of enterprise AI software, today announced that Con Edison has deployed several new AI-powered business applications C3® Suite, including one developed by a data architect at Con Edison using the C3 AI Ex Machina code-free application.

By leveraging data from Con Edison’s Advanced Measurement Infrastructure (AMI), the Conservation Voltage Optimization (CVO) application reduces the amount of energy required to provide adequate electrical service, thereby reducing production energy, operating costs and overall CO.2 emissions. By analyzing AMI voltage measurements at 15 minute intervals on approximately 3.1 million electricity meters and incorporating hierarchical data elements of the distribution network, CVO reveals opportunities for voltage optimization at different levels of distribution, including at the level of substations and individual structures. As previously shared by Con Edison, it is estimated that voltage reductions of around 3% can result in energy savings of 1.5% over 20 years through better voltage management.

Working with C3 AI, Con Edison integrates AMI’s 15-minute interval data with data from 27 enterprise source systems, creating 800 billion new lines of data per year (or 2.2 billion per day) , out of a total of 3.4 million electricity meters installed at Con Edison and Orange and Rockland Utilities to create a 415TB enterprise data analytics platform, growing at 200TB per year.

“We are excited to continue our rapid innovation and deliver next-generation enterprise AI applications with Con Edison, a market leader and one of the largest integrated utilities in the United States,” said Ed Abbo, president and technical director of C3 AI. “Our work with Con Edison illustrates how large enterprises can reduce the time it takes to deploy new AI applications on the open and model-based AI architecture of the C3 AI Suite, and dramatically increase the value ‘they derive investments in business analysis. “

Con Edison continues to leverage the data-driven insights of the C3 AI suite to reduce operating costs by optimizing work and increasing productivity. In addition to CVO, Con Edison has also successfully deployed additional new applications with C3 AI to accelerate value creation for its customers, including:

  • Network modernization application: Identifies abnormal neutral branch voltages, optimizes work orders based on street condition and site access to prioritize strategic planning efforts, detects anomalies in outages and highlights discrepancies in customer projects.

  • AI based income protection app: Reduces the economic burden of energy theft and lost revenue by taking advantage of meter alarms and other relevant data.

  • “Hot Socket” monitoring solution: Enables the rapid detection and identification of overheating issues (a “hot socket”) and manages the troubleshooting lifecycle. This solution was deployed in the C3 AI AMI Operations application after being prototyped using C3 AI Ex Machina.

“We have found in practical use the C3 AI suite, with its model-driven architecture, to be powerful, scalable and facilitate rapid innovation,” said Chief Enterprise Architect at Con Edison Allisyn Glasser. “For example, the C3 AI AMI application integrates billions of near real-time measurements per day from millions of meters to provide timely and actionable information. The C3 AI platform helps us modernize our operations and increase efficiency while improving services for our customers. We are working with C3 AI to accelerate the profitability of multiple business units on its comprehensive enterprise AI platform. “
